How to Create Your Very Own “Bigfoot” Cast By Rick Spears and Roxyanne Young
Prep Time: About fifteen minutes Drying Time: Overnight
Materials Needed Plaster of Paris – one box Room temperature water – about two cups A plastic bowl for mixing the plaster A large, shallow dishpan (a pie tin might work if you have small feet) Sandbox sand – enough to fill the dishpan halfway A work area outside A garden hose with water A soft-bristled 4” paint brush A large paperclip (optional)
- First spread a thick layer of sand in the bottom of the dishpan and dampen it with a garden hose. Just a little, like from a light, misty rainfall.
- Set the dishpan out several feet from where you’re standing, then walk purposefully toward it. Step in and keep walking. Don’t break your stride. Just walk as naturally as you can. The impression left is exactly the kind of impression that Bigfoot leaves when he’s walking along a muddy creek bank in the forest.
- Next, mix the entire box of plaster with the two cups of water. This is a lot more plaster-to-water than the box instructions say, but the thicker your mix, the stronger your foot cast will be.
- When the plaster is well mixed – there shouldn’t be any lumps – pour it carefully into your footprint. Try not to spill over the sides onto the flat sandy part.
- Let the footprint set for about thirty minutes before you try to move it. Now’s the time, too, to set the paperclip in the back in case you want to hang your foot print on the wall later. This is optional, though.
- Allow your footprint to dry overnight in a safe place. The next day, you can lift it out of the sand and brush it off.
- It will still have a lot of sand stuck to it, so use the soft-bristled 4” paint brush to remove as much as possible.
